Global standard for packaging and packaging materials

Certification on the controlled safety of your food and non-food packaging (as per the requirements of UK distributors).

Outline of the solution

The British Retail Consortium (BRC), whose membership base brings together leading British household-name chain stores and distributors (including Sainsbury's, Tesco, Asda and Waitrose) is both creator and co-owner of the Global Standard for Packaging and Packaging Materials (GSPPM) in tandem with the British Institute of Packaging (IoP).

This standard is designed to set common cross-industry baseline safety and hygiene requirements for your food and non-food packaging.

There is also another benchmark standard specifically targeting the food industry, called Global Standard for Food Safety (GSFS) issue 5, for use by suppliers delivering distributor-brand food products.

The benefits

Certification benchmarked to the Global Standard for Packaging and Packaging Materials (GSPPM) issue 3 enables you to:

  • provide the leading British retail chains like Tesco, Asda and Sainsbury's with assurances and guarantees that you fully control product quality and product safety,
  • gain marketplace visibility by placing your newly-earned certificate online on the BRC website , alongside your GSPPM issue 3 audit report,
  • and cuts the number of (second-party) customer audits being conducted at your company.

Who are the target audience?

This certification is targeted at food-industry companies producing food and non-food packaging for the UK market.
