The solution to your occupational health and safety challengesl

Occupational health and safety are at the forefront of today's social concerns. Businesses need tools to help framework a sustained and structured OH&S approach that hinges on risk assessment. Occupational health and safety (OH&S) management systems provide the platform needed.
OHSAS 18001 was developed in 1999 in response to widespread business demand for a certification standard governing occupational health and safety management systems, in much the same way as ISO 14001 for environmental management (similar structural template). This international specification applies specifically to occupational health and safety.

Standards

Outline

Based on the DEMING cycle, a concept widely known as "PDCA", OHSAS 18001:2007 enables any organization to:

  • forge an Occupational Health and Safety (OH&S) policy,
  • establish objectives and processes for reaching the targets pledged in this policy,
  • take all necessary measures to improve OH&S performance,
  • and deliver proof that the OH&S system is in conformance with OHS 18001 requirements.

Certification process

Steps to OHSAS 18001 certification

  • Audit step 1: analysis on the key OH&S management system components (risks, regulatory intelligence, internal audit, management review, definition and design of the audit schedule...)
  • Audit step 2: auditing rollout of the OH&S management system (interviews, etc.)
  • Decision to award certification taken by qualified AFNOR Certification Experts (based on the audit report)
  • Certificate issued
  • 12-month routine surveillance audit: sustainability of the OH&S management system

At three years on: certificate renewal (contract)

The benefits

OHSAS 18001 certification provides an all-round response to regulatory, social and economic challenges, enabling organizations to:

  • minimize workplace injuries,
  • improve the company's productivity, and cut costs by gaining full control of staff safety-related risks,
  • minimize the risks of potential accident-related litigation,
  • integrate OH&S prevention measures up and down the company, engaging endorsement for the approach from both staff and senior executives.

Why AFNOR Certification is the right choice

  • AFNOR Certification has led the French field in OHSAS 18001 certification for close-on a decade; we were the first certification body in France to deliver certification to OHSAS 18001 in 2000.
  • Our fully-qualified OHSAS 18001-standard OH&S auditors have insight, skills and experience in your business sector, and their key inside knowledge on QSE benchmarks enables them to lead dual-standard audits.

Combination certification coverage

OHSAS 18001 is integratable with other quality (ISO 9001 plus sector-dedicated) and environment (ISO 14001) initiatives, and the related audits can be cross-coordinated.
