OHSAS 18001 was developed in 1999 in response to widespread business demand for a certification standard governing occupational health and safety management systems, in much the same way as ISO 14001 for environmental management (similar structural template). Outline

Based on the DEMING cycle, a concept widely known as "PDCA", OHSAS 18001:2007 enables any organization to:

 
  • forge an Occupational Health and Safety (OH&S) policy,
  • establish objectives and processes for reaching the targets pledged in this policy,
  • take all necessary measures to improve OH&S performance,
  • and deliver proof that the OH&S system is in conformance with OHS 18001 requirements.

 

Certification process

Steps to OHSAS 18001 certification

 
  • Audit step 1: analysis on the key OH&S management system components (risks, regulatory intelligence, internal audit, management review, definition and design of the audit schedule...)
  • Audit step 2: auditing rollout of the OH&S management system (interviews, etc.)
  • Decision to award certification taken by qualified AFNOR Certification Experts (based on the audit report)
  • Certificate issued
  • 12-month routine surveillance audit: sustainability of the OH&S management system
 

At three years on: certificate renewal (contract)
