About the AFNOR

Our values

Groupe

The AFNOR Group is about objectively addressing the social and economic reality of our working environment. In a nutshell? On one side, those who produce and sell. On the other: the customers.

Producers and sellers have to guarantee the quality of their goods or services, while at the same time controlling costs to enhance competitiveness. The sphere in which customers purchase these goods and services is simply vast, with myriad offers subjectively shifting in and out of favour depending on criteria spanning price, quality, opportunity and marketing. This is why consumers and professionals alike seek out objective pointers capable of providing them reassurance on the exact value of their purchase, right down to the social and environmental implications involved.

The AFNOR Group's job is to provide sellers with the tools that can give buyers reassurance. The AFNOR naturally champions these same citizenship-driven codes of conduct in all its own relations, whether social, economic or environmentally-related.

Sustainable development

From engineering new possibilities for environmental protection measures to co-opting stakeholders, promoting ecodesign approaches and providing businesses with tools paving the way to environmental/social development systems, the AFNOR Group has a long track-record in pioneering sustainable development as one of its leading priorities, and across the full set of competency areas.

The AFNOR Group played its part in the national Grenelle Environment round table by providing each of the eight Grenelle focus-groups with spot-report feedback on current standardization work, and by tabling highly-targeted paths for investigation, thereby demonstrating how standardization can play an instrumental role in leveraging European and international-scale action.

Day-in, day-out, AFNOR Group companies offer their partners — and any other company coming forward with a request — intellectual tools and practical toolkits designed to facilitate the transition to approaches guided by sustainable development policy.

Here at the AFNOR Group, the source of tomorrow's wealth lies in today's responsible value-creation.

Living by our convictions

The AFNOR Group unblinkingly invests in the integrated business governance sector. Here are a few of many examples:

In February 2009, we moved to centralize all our teams from the Greater Paris region at the La Plaine Saint-Denis site. This meant building 5,000 m² of premises. AFNOR selected the ISO 9001-certified Sidec as general contractor for the project to guarantee that project execution generated the lowest possible environmental impact and that the new building would offer excellent energy efficiency and outstanding water and waste management performance.

All of the AFNOR's dealings with the Group's suppliers are conducted in line with responsible purchasing policy, providing leverage for cutting costs. The assessment criteria governing which service providers will be contracted factors in sustainable development initiatives, investments committed to quality-oriented policy, and wherever possible, geographical proximity in order to curb transport-related environmental impact. In 2010, 40.41% of the consultations conducted by the Purchasing Department have incorporated sustainability criteria. Contracting with suppliers of the "adapted sector” is also progressing.

Any business staking sustainable development claims cannot disregard the social development aspect. While scrupulously maintaining our stringent recruitment process requirements, the AFNOR Group is also a partner on the 'Nos quartiers ont des talents' initiative designed to promote access to local employment for young Seine Saint-Denis undergraduates. So far, since 2006, 6 new college-leavers have been given their first break. The group, represented by 65 mentors, has accompanied 235 young people since 2006; 102 got a job. In 2010, the group has also recruited 31 young people from the districts of the Seine-Saint-Denis. It represents 85% of the under 25 age category employed over the year.

On another front requiring a more diplomatic approach, the Group has already managed to cross the first milestone in recruiting and retaining employees with disabilities. An action plan targeting realistically achievable objectives is now up and running, the aim being to close the gap between recruitment needs and the constraints and adaptations imposed by different forms of disability. In March 2010, the Group has set up a day of solidarity alongside the association dedicated to public service, Unis-Cité. More than 400 people gave a day of their working time to 20 associations projects mostly located in Seine-Saint-Denis. AFNOR Group also provided funding of 32 missions in six months for 18 to 25 years, representing more than 1500 hours of voluntary civic service.

One of the AFNOR Group's key strengths is that we always get men and women working better together, in a decent and dignified environment, working to help build a safer world.

National and international ties

The AFNOR Group has always strived to nurture ties and demonstrate our ability to see the bigger picture, extending beyond our business sectors and work record to take on a role as partner promoting the cross-fertilization of ideas and feedback on field experience.

The AFNOR Group has offices in 13 of the French regions. On the international scene, the AFNOR Group offer — essentially our assessment, certification and training services — is marketed in 90 countries through close-on 28 agencies worldwide.

The services we deliver offer local businesses the advantage of partnered guidance in launching a cohesive first-rank performance system for European or international service solutions, and provide the kind of tailored support that has proven so essential to French or European corporations. The net result is that one in two new certifications awarded are now issued abroad.
