CEN delivers standard on magnetic toys

An eagerly awaited standard on magnetic toys was delivered by CEN Technical Committee "Safety of Toys".

In May 2007, CEN received a Mandate to amend the European Standard (EN) 71-1 on toys to include the specific risks related to small magnets in toys. That standard has been completed, and was published. The work falls under the Directive 88/378/EEC on the safety of toys.

The standard, EN 71-1 already specified requirements for packaging, marking, and labelling. The revision follows the high number of incidents and complaints regarding the safety of magnets in toys. The amendment (A8) contains requirements that are intended to address the hazards associated with ingestion of strong magnets (e.g. Neodymium Iron Boron type magnets), that are capable of causing intestinal perforation or blockage. These hazards are additional to those associated with small parts such as suffocation or asphyxiation. The requirements apply regardless of the intended age of the user.

European Standards are a powerful instrument for strengthening market surveillance, and guide market forces towards greater safety, particularly where children are concerned.
