Sustainable Biomass Certification with GUTcert, the German subsidiary of AFNOR Group

GUTcert is one of the first companies that has been approved and is registered by the BLE as certification body for biomass worldwide and is authorised to appoint all its listed and trained auditors to perform assessments.


Biomass has become an important resource for renewable energy production in Germany, Europe and worldwide and its market relevance is growing continuously. It offers an alternative to fossil energy resources and contributes to the reduction of carbon emissions and climate protection. The advantages of bio energy should never be obtained at the expense of the environment and the population in the producer countries.


The European Union (EU) responded to this approving a directive on renewable energies (2009/28/EC) and thereby sets a worldwide trend. On the one hand the EU promotes energy from biomass by targeting a proportion of 20 % biomass use for total energy production in 2020. On the other hand it requires that biomass used for energy production or as biofuels within the EU has to be proven sustainable. The EU directive has to be implemented by the EU member states within the next few years.


GUTcert, as a subsidiary of AFNOR Group, is one of the first companies that has been approved and is registered by the BLE as certification body for biomass worldwide and is authorised to appoint all its listed and trained auditors to perform assessments.
