Document management is one of the functions that has evolved most in recent years. That said, the levels of document management performance currently available are still widely ignored, even at companies drawing heavily on document flows, through either in-house or outsourced departments. The challenge now is for documentalists, information technicians and document content managers to make the switch from useful department to business-critical function.
Although traditionally organized by IT staff or engineers, electronic document management, which is at the sharp end of the documentation function, is in fact one of the core missions of documentalists, alongside internal information and technical content management.
Document management is unfortunately hemmed in as a function that only meets the informational needs of the business. It needs to unleash its full capacity to provide concrete solutions to a core need: increasing the knowledgebase of the business.
