Drafting automotive standards

Voluntary automotive standards are developed by automotive professionals in committees that bring together all stakeholders with the aim of serving the public interest. One of the most well-known of these is IATF 16949, which establishes the framework for a quality management system specifically for this sector. But as technologies evolve, there is always a need for new best practices to serve as benchmarks.

France's standardization strategy

France’s 2025–2030 standardization strategy devotes a section to sustainable and resilient mobility. Given that France’s goal is to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from the transportation sector by 90% by 2050, the electrification of mobility is a key area. Standardization work is being carried out within ISO/TC 22 on road vehicles, led by France. A special effort will be made to strengthen standardization in the area of vehicle autonomy, with a focus on system reliability.

Other standardization topics in this field include: battery technologies, smart charging, vehicle-to-grid communication, power delivery to moving vehicles, and the development of alternative fuels (second- and third-generation biofuels, carbon-free hydrogen)
.
The leading standards body for this sector: the Automotive Standards Bureau (BNA), acting on behalf of AFNOR.
