Climate and decarbonization : the keys to building a low-carbon world

The Paris Agreement aims to limit the global average temperature increase to less than 2°C by 2100 compared to pre-industrial levels. This goal requires a drastic reduction in greenhouse gas emissions. All economic actors must play their part in this effort.

The benefits of a low-carbon approach

By developing a decarbonization strategy, a company or any other economic player is ensuring that tomorrow's world will be livable, even with limited resources. Ultimately, it's an investment that pays off.

Implement a low-carbon approach in  3 steps

  • A greenhouse gas emissions assessment (BEGES, also known as a carbon footprint®) is an evaluation of the amount of greenhouse gases emitted into the atmosphere over a year by an organization's activities. The Grenelle 2 law of 2010 defines several categories of entities subject to this requirement, including companies with more than 300 employees. Emissions are ranked according to a classification system that identifies the areas on which the decarbonization strategy should focus. The calculation of a BEGES is based on a standardized methodology. The NF EN ISO 14064-1 standard details the different scopes to be taken into account: direct emissions (scope 1), associated emissions (scope 2), and indirect emissions (scope 3).

  • Once you have assessed your situation, you will be equipped to take action:

    • Appointment of a pilot and definition of objectives
    • Scope to be accounted for
    • Data collection and use
    • Emissions reduction action plan
    • Summary of the approach

This is a task for someone within your company, for whom training is recommended. Does this person carry out carbon assessments themselves? They can have their expertise recognized through certification. Once the roadmap has been drawn up for development and production, they can launch a carbon footprint verification or validation process.
See our job descriptions “ Carbon advisor ” and “ Carbon Footprint and BEGES Assessor !
