Why get certified in environmental management?
An eco-label is a mark of environmental quality. When displayed on a product or service, it guarantees—in accordance with the requirements of its specifications—that the manufacturer or service provider has made efforts to reduce its environmental impact. In Europe, more than 400 labels adorn our everyday consumer products. But most of them are self-declarations rather than genuine marks of recognition granted following a third-party audit—that is, certifications of compliance with rules and best practices defined in a set of specifications. A green label’s specifications include a number of requirements that ensure a higher level of environmental consideration. They may be based on a standard (NF, EN, or ISO), but not necessarily.
But in addition to your products and services, you can also highlight your organizational structure. We’re talking here about an environmental management system (EMS), an approach governed by a voluntary standard, ISO 14001. Valid for three years, ISO 14001 certification is a voluntary initiative that demonstrates the company’s environmental responsibility to its customers and partners while strengthening the commitment of management and employees. ISO 14001 certification also provides a significant competitive and financial advantage, as evidenced by the AFNOR Certification study on Feedback from ISO 14001-certified organizations (PDF, 2018).
