Why focus on environmental protection?

In France, tourism capacity is largely concentrated along the coast and in mountainous regions. In these areas, the environmental pressures caused by fluctuations in population are manifold: increased volumes of waste to be collected and treated, heavy visitor traffic in fragile natural environments, energy consumption, air pollution caused by rising road traffic, increased demand for drinking water, management of larger volumes of wastewater, etc. At the same time, high tourist density can also contribute to increasing land development.
