Why pursue training in environmental protection?

To implement an environmental management system, companies rely on QSE (quality, safety, and environment) managers, environmental engineers, and environmental technicians.  The Environmental Manager , often an engineer, is responsible for minimizing the impact of their company’s activities on the environment, while maintaining production levels and profitability. To achieve this, they ensure compliance with regulations and environmental standards (ICPE, REACH Regulation, Water Act, ISO 14001, etc.). They design, oversee, and implement the company’s operational environmental policy. They assess the environmental impact of production methods and propose solutions to optimize equipment, procedures, transportation, and the management of material flows and waste. With a strong technical background, the environmental manager must command credibility among manufacturing managers and on the shop floor. They must also be able to convince executives and staff of the relevance of the actions to be implemented.

Technicians and project managers

In large companies, the environmental manager is supported by environmental engineers (with a master’s degree) and project managers who are experts in specific fields (thermal management, waste, greenhouse gases, etc.). The teams also include environmental technicians (bachelor’s degree), who perform tasks of varying degrees of specialization depending on the company’s size and industry: waste recycling, contaminated sites and soils, indoor air quality, hygiene and cleanliness, etc. A technician must be familiar with the standards and apply them strictly in the field.

Become an environmental auditor

Finally, a company may engage an environmental auditor. This professional conducts audits, either within the company where they work (internal audits) or on behalf of third-party organizations (third-party audits, particularly for obtaining or renewing ISO 14001 certification). In the case of an EMS audit, their mission is to verify whether the company’s approach to managing its environmental policy complies with best practices, particularly the ISO 14001 standard. They must therefore have a thorough understanding of this standard and undergo training to ensure this.
