Voluntary standards for medical devices are developed by medical device professionals in committees that bring together all stakeholders, with the public interest in mind.

The most well-known of these is ISO 13485, which establishes the framework for a quality management system for medical devices. But as technologies evolve, there is always a need for new best practices to serve as a benchmark.
