Why a new NF C15-100 electrical standard?
The NF C15-100 standard is a must-have in the world of construction and electrical engineering! A veritable bible for electricians, a new edition is being released in Download as PDF and a new structure at AFNOR Editions (creating sections numbered 1, 7, 8, 10, and 11).
This collection of official documents, which sets forth the rules for the design, installation, inspection, and maintenance of low-voltage electrical systems, was originally published in 2002 and has been amended five times. These amendments remain in effect until August 2025.
It was time to review everything to take into account:
- Technological developments
- Changes related to new patterns of use
- Developments in CENELEC and IEC harmonization documents at the European and international levels.
This update was necessary to ensure the continued safety of people, animals, and property. It has now been completed under the auspices of the AFNOR U15 committee, which includes some forty professional organizations. You can therefore find the the official text of each of the 21 sections of the NF C15-100 standard on the website of AFNOR Publishing .
The structure of the standard has evolved to make it easier to revise without having to wait twenty-two years! Each title in Series 7 can now be revised independently of 15-100-1, which covers Titles 1 through 6; the series remains the foundation of the standard. “Title 10 from 2016, which concerns residential buildings, remains unchanged,” explains Bernard Gioan, manager of Le Confort Electrique, one of the stakeholders represented on the standards committee as a member of the French Federation of Electrical Integrators (FFIE).
Home Electrical Standards: What Has Changed?
There have been many changes since the previous corpus:
- Efforts have been made to improve clarity and readability through the use of figures and definitions (Sections 1 through 3)
- New topics have been added to the series: energy efficiency, charging infrastructure for electric vehicles, ultra-low-voltage lighting, and more.
NF C15-100 Standard for Charging Stations: What Are the Rules?
One example that clearly illustrates these new requirements is the charging of electric vehicles in commercial buildings. Section NF C15-100-7-722, which you can Download as a PDF:
- Specifies that a dedicated circuit is required to power the charging outlet or charging station
- It has been decided to keep the shutters in their normal position.
New requirements regarding changes to installation methods and the consideration of harmonics necessitate changes to the methods used to calculate cable cross-sections
, adds Bernard Gioan.
With the exception of residential buildings, the method for assessing fire risks in the installation of surge protectors is changing. “The NF C15-100 standard confirms a trend, which began in 2016, toward strengthening fire protection and combating the spread of fire and smoke, by taking into account the Euroclasses of reaction to fire for insulated conductors and cables defined in the Construction Products Regulation,” summarizes Bernard Gioan.
Effective September 2025, the NF C15-100 series will become the standard for new installations and for extensions or modifications to existing installations, as well as for those parts of existing installations affected by such extensions or modifications. However, as of now, the 2024 version of the standards is not referenced in the regulations. This means that the 2002 version of the standards, and any amendments thereto, remain in effect and continue to be mandatory standards within the meaning of the decree of August 3, 2016.

FAQ - NF C15-100 Standard: Official Text
Effective September 2025, the NF C15-100 series applies to new installations and to extensions or modifications of installations, as well as to those parts of existing installations affected by such extensions or modifications. However, the 2024 version of the standards does not yet qualify as a mandatory standard: it has not yet been incorporated into the regulations. This implies that the 2002 version of the standards, and any amendments thereto, remain in effect and continue to serve as mandatory standards, within the meaning of the Decree of August 3, 2016 , to ensure user safety and the proper functioning of electrical equipment. These older versions therefore remain available for free.
The official, up-to-date version of the standard is available in our AFNOR Éditions store. Links to Download the 21 official documents are listed in the previous paragraph.
The applicable version is the one in effect on the date the building permit or prior notice of work is filed. In 2026, for any new project or project affecting all or part of existing facilities, the version resulting from the major revision at the end of 2024 shall apply.
The table must comply with the requirements of the new NF C15-100 standard . Critical points include compliance with ETEL (Electrical Systems in Residential Buildings), the presence of a GTL (Residential Electrical Conduit) of standard dimensions, as well as the installation of 30-mA ground-fault circuit interrupters and circuit breakers suitable for each circuit.
The most significant update is the NF C15-100 standard from August 2024, which you can Download as PDF on the AFNOR Store .
No. The The NF C15-100 standard, 2024 edition, is a copyrighted work. Its development by AFNOR involves experts and significant resources. Purchasing it is a necessary investment to ensure the professional’s legal and technical liability. However, since it is still cited as mandatory in the regulations, the 2002 version of the standard is available for free.
