Two numbers and two magic letters for your smoke detector

On March 8, 2015, the requirement to equip your home with a smoke detector came into effect. In 2025, take the opportunity to check and replace yours! Look for the two-digit rule (1 and 0 for ten years) and the two letters: NF, a mark of quality ensuring that the product complies with technical standards and is therefore safe and effective.

Occupational health and risks

Every year in France, firefighters respond to between 60,000 and 70,000 house fires, which cause more than 200 deaths and over 9,000 injuries (source: Ministry of Health, 2022). And when it doesn't kill, a house fire can leave victims with very serious physical, respiratory, traumatic, and psychological consequences. Not to mention the material damage!

Therefore, the requirement to equip a home with a smoke detector is obvious. In Quebec, where smoke detectors have been mandatory for over thirty years, deaths related to house fires have decreased by two-thirds, according to the French Fire Department. Most deaths occur in homes that are not equipped with smoke detectors, adds the French Firefighting Federation (FFMI), citing data from the European Smoke Alarm Day , a movement that organizes European Smoke Detector Day. This year, the day falls on November 7, 2025. When it comes to this issue, early detection is key: the sooner the alarm is raised, the lower the accident rate , comments Régis Cousin, president of the FFMI.

In France, all homes have been required to be equipped with a smoke alarm since March 8, 2015. In 2025, the tenth anniversary of the entry into force of the Morange Act , which imposes this obligation, is an opportunity to raise awareness of the fundamental role of this equipment, the need to check that it is working properly and to replace it if it is more than ten years old, and the preference that should be given to NF-certified models. Why not go all the way and choose a connected detector that can send alerts to your smartphone? This improves responsiveness in the event of a fire. , suggests Régis Cousin. As the law does not provide for penalties or means of enforcement, the FFMI is campaigning for an energy performance certificate (EPC) to be carried out when there is a change of occupant in a property, either when it is purchased or rented, to check that there is at least one working smoke detector.

NF DAAF: laboratory tests

A stand-alone smoke detector is a self-contained device containing, in a single housing, all the components necessary for smoke detection and the emission of an audible alarm. Placed inside a home, it alerts occupants to the start of a fire. The alarm sounds as soon as smoke forms in the room where it is installed, preferably outside of bathrooms, with one unit per floor. However, this only applies if the smoke detector is operational, i.e., if it has been checked to ensure it is working properly, the batteries have been changed regularly, the unit has been dusted, etc. or even completely replaced once the expiry date has passed. So remember the numbers 1 and 0, for ten (ten years before expiry, the duration recommended by most manufacturers), and the letters N and F, to be sure you are buying quality equipment. The list of brands with NF certification is available at download here.

The NF DAAF mark, created in 1999 and issued by AFNOR Certification, certifies that the detector is easy to install, reliable, and simple to maintain. It acts as an additional quality assurance measure in addition to the CE marking that is mandatory on these products throughout the European Union. In this case, by proving that the device complies with the technical specifications detailed in the NF EN 14604 standard , and that it has undergone laboratory testing to claim this compliance. Here are the main characteristics that are checked:

  • An NF-certified smoke detector uses the principle of optical detection. It does not contain any radioactive substances.
  • An NF-certified smoke alarm must be supplied with its battery (lithium or alkaline) and with screws and wall plugs.
  • An NF-certified smoke alarm limits the risk of misuse: forgetting to install the battery, installing the battery upside down, etc.
  • An NF-certified smoke alarm is delivered with clear and explicit installation and maintenance instructions (approved by the certifier), written in French.
  • The manufacturer of an NF-certified smoke detector is a member of an eco-organization for the treatment of electronic waste.
  • A telephone helpline for the installation and maintenance of NF-certified smoke detectors is available to consumers.
