Ladders: Reach new heights with the NF EN 131 standard

The voluntary standard NF EN 131 is a European standard, adopted into the French collection, which describes the design rules and minimum dimensions for portable ladders and step stools, excluding ladders specific to certain trades, such as roof ladders, fruit-picking ladders, and window-cleaning ladders. Thus, it specifies a maximum load of 150 kg and profile thicknesses of 1 mm for steel models and 1.2 mm for aluminum models.

Since January 1, 2018, changes have been made to product dimensions, quality testing, and the information to be provided to users in order to enhance safety. Consequently, it was necessary to update the text, at least Part 1, as the last version dated back to 2015. A standards committee, composed of key market players and led by AFNOR, has taken on this task, and now is the time to share your comments during the public consultation phase.

NF EN 131-1: Provide feedback on the draft revised standard

The first visible change is that all ladders over 3 meters in length that can be used in a leaning position must now be equipped with a safety device to prevent the leaning surface from spreading apart. This spread must remain less than 1.2 meters and varies depending on the ladder’s length. The text also details the characteristics of slip-resistant surfaces for rungs, steps, and platforms. The standard further requires manufacturers to implement new testing protocols to assess ladder strength, improve signage, and provide documentation that is easily accessible and heavily illustrated with pictograms, with assembly instructions attached to one of the uprights.
