ISO 19011 provides guidelines on auditing management systems, including audit principles, managing an audit program, and conducting management system audits. It also provides guidance on assessing the competence of persons involved in the audit process, including the person responsible for managing the audit program, auditors, and audit teams.

This standard applies to all organizations that need to conduct internal or external audits of management systems or manage an audit program.

This second edition of NF EN ISO 19011 cancels and replaces NF EN ISO 19011:2002, which has undergone technical revision. The main differences between the 2002 and 2011 versions of NF EN ISO 19011 are:

  • The scope of application, which in the previous version was limited to the audit of quality management and environmental management systems, now covers the audit of all management systems, regardless of type.
  • the relationship between NF EN ISO 19011 and NF EN ISO/IEC 17021 is clarified;
  • Remote audit methods and the concept of risk are introduced;
  • Confidentiality is added as a new principle;
  • Articles 5, 6, and 7 have been reorganized;
  • the process of determining and assessing skills is strengthened;
    A new Appendix A provides illustrative examples of discipline-specific knowledge and skills.
