Renewable energy : solutions to inspire confidence

The widespread use of renewable energies, along with energy conservation and efficiency, is one of the pillars of the energy transition. To develop them, best practices must be applied and trust must be built.

The benefits of a renewable energy approach

Renewable energy is one of the key areas for achieving the European target of reducing greenhouse gas emissions by at least 55% in 2030 compared to 1990 levels, and in the longer term, achieving carbon neutrality by 2050. The RED III Directive of 2023 sets a target of 42.5% renewable energy in the EU's final energy consumption by 2030.

Implementing a renewable energy strategy in 3 steps

  • Wood, algae, manure, agricultural by-products, sewage sludge... Since biomass consists of organic matter that has absorbed CO2 to form, methanizing it is climate neutral: the CO2 released when biogas is burned is produced in the same quantities. This is why methanization is a carbon-free renewable energy source. However, methanization projects can sometimes be met with a certain amount of mistrust. Odors, blockages, economic viability, technological sustainability... Projects are scrutinized. The Qualimétha label is there to inspire confidence.

  • Solar professionals have a wide range of surfaces to choose from for installing collectors, the aim being to take advantage of those that have another function, while being close to electricity distribution networks (to minimize connection costs and work) and places of consumption. Agrivoltaics involves deploying solar panels in agricultural environments, not on the roofs of farms and barns, but on plots of land used for crops and livestock. The law of March 10, 2023, makes its development conditional on a commitment: that projects give priority to agricultural production over energy production.

  • Since the liberalization of the electricity market, suppliers have been competing with so-called green offers. The principle is that a supplier purchases guarantees of origin equal to the amount of electricity consumed by its green offer customers: 1 GO for every 1 MWh purchased. But then, this supplier has to source electricity to satisfy its customers, and it does not necessarily buy it from the renewable producers in question! Nor at the same time! To remedy this shortcoming, the French Environment and Energy Management Agency (ADEME) has created the VertVolt label. It is based on a grid requiring the purchase of green electricity and GOs associated with the same producer.
