Developing railway standards

Voluntary standards for the railway sector are developed by railway professionals through committees that bring together all stakeholders, with the aim of serving the public interest.

The best known of these are NF EN 50128, which defines five levels of safety integrity for software used in this sector—particularly for signaling—and ISO 22163, which provides a railway quality management system. The French Standardization Strategy for 2025–2030 devotes a section to sustainable and resilient mobility, which includes rail transport.

The leading standards body for this sector: the Railway Standardization Office ( National Library of France ), on behalf of AFNOR.
