Writing standards for the water sector
Water conservation, wastewater treatment, water reuse, management… Join AFNOR’s standards committee to help establish best practices for the water sector.
The core of our water management standardization services
- A management system approach
- Technical specifications for materials and equipment
- Standards for laboratory measurement and analysis

Why is standardization important in water management?
As the flagship initiative of the AFNOR Group, the management system approach involves building and developing business through interactions and connections with stakeholders, in order to achieve objectives and ensure they have a positive impact.
This approach enables more efficient use of resources, better risk management, protection of people and the environment, and an increased ability to deliver high-impact products and services to customers and stakeholders. All of this is done in a spirit of continuous improvement, with a designated leader, and following the "Plan, Do, Check, Act" (PDCA) cycle.
In the water sector, it is the voluntary standard NF ISO 46001 which provides guidelines for establishing and maintaining this management system. Many other technical standards exist or are being developed to harmonize practices. For example, the standard NF EN 17892 from June 2024 on the detection and measurement of PFAS in drinking water, adopted throughout Europe and using the method of liquid chromatography coupled with tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS).
